Where did all this stuff come from?? That’s a question that everyone seems to ask when they are getting ready to move. Even after sorting through and donating or throwing away items you still have lots of items to pack. With the cost of packing materials increasing you may want to consider these methods to obtain free boxes. Just remember to always ask first, taking items without permission could be considered theft. Its always better to be courteous and get permission.

Retailers

Stores receive lots of cardboard boxes, sometimes daily. Its worth asking retailers if they have any extra boxes they don’t need. Start with office supply stores, home improvement stores, office supply stores and liquor stores. They may be happy to have you help them recycle and even tell you the best days to stop by for additional boxes.

Dorms and Apartment Buildings

If you are moving at the end or beginning of school year and you live near a student preferred apartment or college dorm you will be sitting on a gold mine for cardboard boxes. Speak with the property manager or student housing representative, they may just approve you to remove what is now unwanted boxes used to students who recently moved into/out of the buildings.

Recycling Centers

Don’t be shy, speak with the attendant at the center, they may be willing to allow you to take broken down cardboard boxes. You will have to rebuild the boxes with packing tape to be able to repurpose them for your move, but at least the boxes will be free.

Local Social Media Groups

Facebook and other social media platforms have a lot of groups that feature free stuff. It is very common to see posts for people who recently moved offering their used boxes to the community. When you find a post be prepared to act right away! The offerings are typically first come, first served and are always in high demand.
